Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708)
was the director of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He exploited the important
period of first French colonial expansion and became one of the first and best
known plant hunters. He travelled throughout western Europe by order of the
King, and then was touring the Levant, Persia, Armenia, 1700 – 1702 and collected
over 1,350 plant specimens.
