Joséphine Bonaparte - The Empress and wife of Napoleon Bonaparte - commissioned famous  work of monocotyledons growing in her gardens and glasshouses at Malmaison. Most famous of those times French botanical artist, Pierre Joseph Redouté, painted the studies for its 486 plates, which were engraved over 14 years by 18 printmakers under his direction.
The plant itself, South African native now is called Brunsvigia josephinae has arrived to Holland in 1789 and bloomed for the first time in Europe at Malmaison (France) in 1805.
